???? About Norval Morrisseau
Norval Morrisseau, also known as Copper Thunderbird, was a legendary Ojibway artist and the founder of the Woodland School of Art. He was the first Eastern Woodlands painter to express Indigenous spirituality through modern media like acrylic paintings and prints.
His works are known for bold black lines, radiant colours, and deeply symbolic imagery. Morrisseau’s paintings reflect Anishnaabe cosmology, shamanic teachings, and his journey through both Indigenous and Christian worldviews.
He influenced generations of First Nations artists, including Daphne Odjig and Joshim Kakegamic. In 1978, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada, and his works are now held in collections across the globe.
